About Founder

"There can be no peace in the world until there is peace within" - Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi
A Special Child was born in a special family

Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi was born on the Spring Equinox, the 21st of March in  a small village in the geographic center of India. Seeing the beauty of the child born  with spotless brilliance, they called her Nirmala, which means 'Immaculate'.

At very young age she participated in the freedom struggle movement of India and spent time in Ashram of Mahatma Gandhi ,who quickly recognised the special qualities and frequently sought her advice on specific matters.

Her Father, Prasad Rao Salve, was the direct descendant of the Shalivahana's royal dynasty. He was fluent in 14 languages, well versed in the arts, literature and sciences, and translated the Koran into marathi language. Even today, he is remembered by many as an exceptional freedom fighter, and was the only Christian member in the first legislative parliament of India. In 1920, Prasad Rao Salve married Lady Cornelia who was highly educated in Sanskrit, Urdu and Hindi. Cornelia was the first lady to earn a masters degree in mathematics from Fergusson University.

From education to married life

When the time came for higher education, Nirmala choose to study the field of medicine focusing on the scientific terminology of the anatomy, and human physiology. However, Her heart was in the country's freedom struggle. In 1942, She spearheaded the student struggle for freedom and often frequented the jails.

After the proclamation of independence of India, Shri Mataji married Mr. Chandika Prasad Srivastava, on the 7th of April 1947, one of India's most dedicated civil servant officers. His career took a sudden ascent as he became the Secretary to the then Prime Minister of India, Lal Bahadur Shastri. In 1974, he was elected to serve as the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), a United Nations agency from 1974 to 1989, and was knighted by the queen of England. Sir C.P. Srivastava was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India's second highest civilian award, by the President of India. Shri Mataji devoted Herself to Her family. They had two lovely daughters, Kalpana and Sadhana.

A new Discovery called "Self Realisation and Sahaja Yoga was born"

As a constant effort to improve the state of current society and after seeing both daughter happily married and fulfilling her responsibilities in family, in 1970 ,Shri Mata Ji Nirmala devi discovered a unique method called as "Self Realisation" through which a common man could use his inner energy (kundalini) to attain not only better health but also lead balanced life and continue with simple few minutes daily meditation to keep his inner energy at optimum level ,which is now known as "Sahaja Yoga Meditation" in 100 over countries around the world.

Sahaja in Sanskrit means ‘spontaneous’ or ‘simple’ or ‘born within’ and Yoga means ‘Union’ with the Self and all pervading or cosmic power. We all are born with inner energy within us to achieve the meditation state. Sahaja Yoga meditation then translates as spontaneous union with self and all pervading power through the inner energy within you.

Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi has been recognized and received numerous awards and accolades in recognition of her selfless work for humanity and improving the human condition.
